Friends only entries

How does anyone else feel about using LJ as a place to record extremely personal things? I'm still rather hesitant about doing that - even with private entries, because I'm sure that I'll make mistakes and forget to mark things private, and that for any given code there's a way to break it - so someone determined enough probably could get into them.

And a related question - how much is it acceptable to write about other people? If I was writing on paper there's lots of things I'd write that I simply wouldn't say on here, for fear of what I say getting back to the person I wrote about, and because I wouldn't be happy if anyone else did that to me. I think I'm working my way to the conclusion that an LJ isn't a substitue for a diary type thing.

Edit Slightly altered 6th July 2004, so I can make this a public entry.
