Either I'm entirely too trusting
or you lot are panicing about nothing. Yes, LJ has been sold (and if you're not watching
news then you ought to be).
But, I trust
rahaeli - have a look at this post and perhaps more importantly this one. The latter post gives a link to the changes in the ToS. Read the facts before getting worked up about it.
All of that said, I am planning on taking back ups of my journal (really, I've been planning on doing this since about mid way through 2003 and haven't got round to it yet). If anyone else is thinking of doing the same, I suggest waiting for a few days - lots of the back up tools are overloaded atm with lots of people trying to use them, and then have a look through Philip's post and FAQ 8.
Edit If you're really concerned about LJ disappearing or something, I'd suggest compiling a list of your friends' real email addresses/other contact details.

So even if you have to sign up to something you don't want to sign up to, it'd only be a temporary thing - you could agree to the terms, download your entries and never come back. I very much doubt there's going to be seriously questionable stuff in the new ToS eg. 'we may spam you whenever we like', 'the copyright in your entries is ours and we can do what we like with them'.

I've only had a skim through. Nothing evil or backstabbing from what I can tell :)

don't mind me. I'm not awake and just pouncing on things.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if there was some tweak to the UI or the way in which LJ works that would put me off things, or if something happened that made LJ less usable than it is now, so I will be renewing my paid account in 2 or 6 monthly chunks rather than with an annual subscription.

Now I'm getting scared. You're the second person to say that to me today, which is generally indication that something is about to go very, very wrong:-p
I suspect there will be tweaks to the UI, but I'm hoping that the essential ethos of the service will stay the same. I've never paid for an account - I have a paid account from doing LJ support stuff.
