I'm a Londoner and I'm pissed off

It took me ages getting home yesterday evening - I thought getting to Paddington to pick up the Bakerloo line would be quickest, but didn't factor in having to spend twenty minutes on a platform waiting for a train. Need to work out the best routes home - I think the 52 from Victoria might be the better option. The journey planner reckons a 2 to Marble Arch then a 414/16/6 (note that you can get a 16 from Victoria) to Edgware Road then walk to Edgware Road Stop C and get an 18 home.

Got into work at about 11.40am today. First stage of the journey from Kensal Green - Oxford Circus went fine. Then Oxford Circus - Victoria was reasonable if a bit slow. The Victoria line was suspended south of Victoria so I caught a No 2 bus towards Noword Garage that should stop at Vauxhall. Unfortunately as we reached Vauxhall Bridge we were told that it was closed so the bus diverted along Lambeth Bridge and I got off there and walked along Albert Embankment until I reached the police cordons. Then I spent the next hour and a half or so walking along Kennington Lane then down Durham Street then past the Oval then along a bit of Clapham Road, along Fentiman Road and finally across Miles Road which brought me to Wandsworth Road and work.

Given that I'm going off camping tomorrow I had a huge bag full of stuff with me - I may see if there's any of it I can do without depending on what my journey home (to Hampshire) is going to be like.

I'm tempted to buy a bike, but realistically the distance between Kensal Green and Vauxhall is just too far to cycle and lots of bits of the tube (ie. the entire Victoria line) won't let you take unfolded bikes through them.

[livejournal.com profile] bootpunk managed to win a very nice folding mountain bike worth £1000 for only £86 on eBay last night. Something to think about perhaps?

I need to do some serious bike maintenance on my mountain bike; then I intend to start cycling everywhere. I'll start out gently - just between my flat and Diva's to begin with, then down into Walthamstow and back, then down to Seven Sisters (and the Oakdale Arms!) and back, and so forth.

I was about to suggest a folder - if you don't fancy Ebay, you can get Dahon folding bikes pretty cheaply new.

In case either of you don't already know: London cycle guides & other cycle maps available online (the London cycle guides can also be picked up for free in bike shops); and Journeyplanner now does cycle routes as well (there's a 'show me cycle-only routes' button at the bottom of the 'more options' thing). Tried the alternative route it suggested to/from St P yesterday evening & this morning. Unfortunately it tried to direct me up Goods Way last night; but when I got round that it was fine, & quite a nice route. This morning's was about 5-10 min quicker than my normal route, which ain't bad. Their timings are a bit off, though - I think they just work it out at 12mph, which doesn't allow for the many traffic lights you encounter on any given route.

I'm a big fan of the Brompton folding bike. Action Bikes seem to hire them; no idea if any of their branches are near you.

Certainly a lot smaller when folded, though no folding bikes are particularly light to carry around for long periods. The Brompton cunningly has little trolley wheels, which you can supposedly use to trundle it around station platforms. I've never tried this myself.
