Alumni weekend

I am still considering whether or not to go to the Oxford Alumni weekend in September. It would be good to go and take my MA, because it'd be nice to be able to use the title. But Merton is holding a gaudy for my year two weekends after the weekend of the Alumni weekend. Oxford twice in such a short space of time is possibly a bit much. I'd rather go to the gaudy than the university wide event.

I don't know who's going to want to go to a weekend like this ie. whether there'll be anyone else there in their 20s at all. I'm a bit worried about the cost - £50 for a weekend pass + accommodation + food, before anything else. So quick poll of LJ people - is anyone here planning on going?

About the MA, do Oxford let you take degrees in absentia? (Cambridge do.) If you're not bothered about the ceremony and associated fuss then that could be something to do.

I doubt I will go to the Alumni weekend, but might go the Merton Gaudy. It depends on a lot of stuff which I can't get my head round yet.

I have attended Gaudies (argh pluralization crisis!) before now cos my dad is also a Mertonian. This makes it a lot more fun when most of the attendees are several decades older, because they are all old friends of my dad's. But even the ones who are not tend to be friendly in that characteristically Merton-ish way. There are usually a handful of people our age too, and I think there will be more this year as they're concentrating on our group. And the events tend to be fun, eg a talk from Mark Haddon (of Curious Incident fame) was particularly memorable. IMO hearing Warden Rawson speak is usually worth the price of admission!
