Mobile broadband

I could do with a PAYG mobile broadband thingy to use with my Eee PC, and this offer from Vodaphone looks reasonable, but says it only works on Windows machines. Does anyone know whether it would work with a linux based Eee PC and if not any alternative PAYG mobile broadband deals that do work with Eee PCs?

I believe it's a Huwaei E220 dongle which is supported by the "option" driver under Linux. It really comes down to what Linux distro you're running on the EEE; I'm pretty sure the Ubuntu netbook remix will Just Work with Network Manager.

http://www.we-u.com/?p=426 seems to suggest it'll also Just Work on the EEE Xandros setup.

There's also a Vodafone Betavine project for their dongles, which might mean more work setting it up but does look to have suitable drivers:

https://forge.betavine.net/projects/vodafonemobilec/

I have an Orange 3G dongle (Icon 225, on a contract) for my EEE 901, but I'm running Debian and building my own kernels so it's not quite as easy a solution (I think mainline support is a lot better than when I first got it a year ago though).

works fine with my ubuntu install with the mobile connect software from betavine.net. So no reason why it shouldnt. Although it has to be said i havent tried topping up yet.(for reasons other than the software might not be able to do it. whoich may also be true.)
Are you still running the installed OS?

if so i can have a play on my eee 701.

My Ubuntu Eee managed fine with the T-Mobile stick, with the only issue being needed to ring customer services to set up anything longer than a one day package.

Whether that's a good offer depends on your usage: £15 gets me 30 days on T-Mobile, with a 3Gb 'go above this and we will warn you rather than charge you' data allowance. Use a little every so often, and Vodafone looks better, whereas if you use more in a month, T-Mobile looks better. 'Other mobile offers exist.'

T-mobile's deal is £X per day, £Y per week, or £Z per month (use it for a few days, and it will roll to the week deal as it would be cheaper than 7xDays), but for light use, that Vodaphone deal may be a better deal - esp if it doesn't expire.

I'll bear it in mind for myself if I get another mobile stick. Cheers for pointing it out.

Are you sure it rolls to the week/month deal? Because I'm not...

You may well be right on it not rolling over to more days. I thought I had remembered that from an article in a magazine. My bad, but then Vodaphone setup looks to be the better deal anyway.
