Sticking it all back together again
A whole load of things were thrown by me feeling so ill on Monday - and I'm only just now finding some time to sort them all - the electricity meter will be changed on the morning of 7th September and I've an appointment with the practice nurse to register with the surgery on 2nd September at 8.30am (well that was thrown by me not managing to leave work early enough for the last appointment). So just need to book an eye test now - I think that'll have to wait for a couple of weeks because I think I want to go home this weekend so that I take home my sorted camp licence stuff (yes, I have still got to do the sorting) and return some bits to Monica etc.
I need some pieces of dowel to hang some wall hangings. I also need to go to Sainsburys and do some major food shopping - now that I've got a working freezer there's no reason I can't go back to cooking really large meals and freezing them, so I just need to buy myself some more plastic containers to store individual portions.
Now on to the exciting bit - if you are aged between 15-25 (are UK based!) and fancy three nights doing some sort of exploring then I want to hear from you! The next part of my Queen's Guide Award involves organising an 'exploration' - I don't know what I want to explore just yet, I'm still waiting for inspiration to strike. We'll be staying in Youth Hostels/B&Bs and will be exploring by public transport/car. Other people have explored a range of breweries, the area the Chalet School books were set in - so the range of what I could explore is vast. We will be self catering (I'm not ruling out buying a couple of meals, but for cost reasons I want to aim to self cater most of it). There are no restrictions on sex (except that I have to have parental permission if I have anyone under 18 with me and there are men in the group). The only form I will make you fill in is a health form and you can seal that in an envelope so that it's only opened if you're very ill and are being sent to hospital. Oh and I will ask you to tell me your dietary requirements so that I don't poison you. There has to be at least four of us and a maximum of eight (including me) but I'm not too worried about that for the moment, I just want to hear if anyone's theoretically interested. I suspect this won't be organised until next Easter/Summer, given how busy I am.

But umm, AFAI'm concerned people who come with me who are over the age of consent are more than welcome to have sex, so long as they do so in private (ie. not in a shared bedroom), don't coerce anyone else to join them and don't disturb anyone else.

'Unrestricted sex' however has entirely different connotations ;p
Especially when one makes references to exploration.
Sorry, I'm being fil'fy. I'll stop ;p

People who tell you something in language is "correct" should make you suspicious.
Presumably the idea that gender means identity and sex biology is at most no older than the idea the two might be different; hanging the former off grammatical gender makes a certain amount of sense in some languages (though consider e.g. das Mädchen). Lots of dictionaries will report them as synonyms in this context, though there are lots of people who do use them to make this distinction.

Suggestions for places to 'explore' might be:
The City of York. It's an old city, and there are a _vast_ number of passages and alleys known as 'snickleways'.
The setting for any given book is a nice idea, perhaps some of Dicken's books might be a good source of enlightenment? (eg. the mayor of casterbridge (dorchester), a tale of two cities).
Or maybe take a religious studies slant on the exploration - attempt to visit and 'enquire' at several different religious buildings. A church, a mosque, a buddhist temple etc.

York sounds like an interesting place to explore. *blushes* I've never read any Dickens - I guess I should recify that at some point (well I certainly know the story to Oliver Twist, but I don't think I ever read the original text). Many of my favourite books are fantasy and aren't based on real places which means I can't really use them.
A religious slant could be interesting - but people often don't like tourists in the middle of their religious buildings.

I'm personally a big fan of fantasy books, but that doesn't preclude them as possible places to 'look'. After all, authors typically draw their inspiration from somewhere...
Dickens is a little more grounded in the 'real world' but does change places somewhat. There's numerous 'classic' authors that 'mostly' plagiarise real world settings though. (and so following the course of a novel can by very interesting, although sometimes can be a little subjective as to which cathedral is the closest fit).
Religious tourism is a bit crass, true. That said though, if approached correctly, few religious groups are unwilling to explain their views to those who are genuinely interested. Especially if approached beforehand.

I'd love to go to Rome and explore the buildings/sites there, but there's more paperwork for me involved in making it an international trip. Hmm, need to find the syllabus again...
