Borders Coffee report

All the usual suspects were there - and I got to meet [livejournal.com profile] reddragdiva who is scarily tall. We moved to Carnichios (Nile will correct my spelling in due course) for dinner - Mark and I had some lovely lasagne, Francis had something with wild boar, Nile some canneloni (sp) and Adam something with mushrooms (correct me if I'm wrong guys). Ooh, then there was chocolate truffle, tiramasu and mandarin sorbet for desert. I had a good time, though I was trying to do the two conversations at once thing - I can't do it. I found it *very* difficult to have any conversation at all in the restaurant because it was so noisy. The glass of wine I had with dinner went straight to my head, aptly illustrating how low my alcohol tolerance is nowadays. I heard about lots of books I should read - am always open to recommendations, please post as comments.

To settle a question that's come up at every Coffee in Borders and to give me some ideas:

Any other hair dying suggestions in comments please.

for hair dye try going to special effects. Its about the best colour we have found - though you will probably have to mail order it from the states.

A parody of the current mundane fassion of bleaching just the bits on top might work...

You'll have to go to seattle then ;)

Everyone is freaky there - including the lawyers beleive it or not!

Judging by the descriptions of the food... you went to Carluccios. A firm favourite in my house :)

We don't have one in the West Midlands :( Matt and I usually meet friends for lunch in the Bluewater branch. Lovely food and shopping in one place :) My idea of bliss. (Except on a Saturday when it is my idea of hell).

I am a convert to letting the professionals take care of my hair. I used to dye it myself, every 6-8 weeks (I am 60-70% grey) for years. Recently I've handed over the chore to Kevin, my wonderful hairdresser.

The results are a lot better. Generally with a professional job you can get advice on what cut would complement your colour... and vice versa.

Yes, I know it's costly. I go to the granny salon at the end of my street and pay only £40... (£20 for the cut - £20 for the colour) even paying that small amount the results are great. (See icon!)

Oh yes. When I had my short hair (of which this is the only remaining picture and it was shorter than that) it was easy to dye it myself, but now it's long I keep finding great big chunks that I'd missed!

Predominantly black/very very dark blue, with lighter blue at the tips.

(I'm generally of the school of thought that believes there's little point to dying your hair unless you make it interesting. As a result, I'm typically a really bad person to ask about things of this nature.)

Why would you want to dye your hair?

Sorry, and this may bring out howls of protest or whatever from all kinds of people, but I am simply unable to comprehend why anyone would want to go to the trouble of dyeing their hair ... maybe it's a hangover from the time when I was ten and my blonde hair started to darken and my mother decided to home bleach it with a peroxide solution ... maybe I'm just weird, I don't know. I am, however, totally incapable of answering a question on hair dyeing couched in the terms in which you asked it. If you'd asked, "Should I dye my hair X colour?" then I could have just cheerfully answered "No" wihtout feeling like a freak who doesn't understand normal folks. Oh well ... plus ca change! ;-)

Carluccio's.

As for the books, well some of what was said was more in the way of descriptive comment than recommendation. But here goes:

  • Good ole' fashioned horror: HP Lovecraft

  • 'Hard' Science fiction: Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven

  • Modern Science fiction: Peter F Hamilton (recommended: 'Mindstar Rising'), Richard K. Morgan ('Altered Carbon' and 'Broken Angels' are very good, despite being insanely violent)

  • Modern Fantasy: Robert Holdstock (recommended: 'Mythago Wood' and if you can find this copy of the original short story, published by F and SF I would be very grateful) and, of course, China Mieville's 'Perdido Street Station'. Neither book contains any orcs, elves or Gods.

  • Geek Hero Author: Neal Stephenson. Get 'Zodiac'for sheer quirky humour, 'Cryptonomicon' for the definitive description of the geeky psyche, and 'Quicksilver' because science fiction doesn't have to be set in the future, it just needs exciting technology and big ideas.

  • Deranged Right-Wing Idealogues: Ayn Rand. Start with 'The Fountainhead' because you have no hope of completing 'Atlas Shrugged' without prior training

Er, is that Too Much Information?

DYE IT ONE THOUSAND COLOURS. (Start with bleaching to near-white, paint colours in, leave twice the recommended time.) You know you want to.
