I don't know, but ten gets you twenty that it depends very heavily indeed on how narrow the host's interpretation of "black tie" is.

No idea, apart from a general dislike of sandals.

For black tie events, sandals are not acceptable; in fact it's debatable whether a skirt is either. Minimum standard would be evening/cocktail dress and court shoes.

I agree. Black tie !=sandals.

Depends on the sandals. Itty bitty strappy things with high heels and painted toe nails seem to be perfectly acceptable. Birkenstocks less so.

Get a pedicure and you'll be just fine. Nicely done toe-nails are always fun, even if fingernail polish is not your thing. Get them to put a pattern on the big toe nail.

I concur. Except I usually ignore the itty bitty shoes thing and go with shoes with closed toes which don't completely kill my feet and ignore the social mores for comfort and practicality.

Whether I would wear tights or not would depend on the likely temperature (though this time of year it has suddenly started to get a lot colder) - just because the guys have to overheat on account of 'black tie' doesn't mean you should too.

BTW how did your aunt kill your sandals?

You should be wearing a long skirt or cocktail dress if it's black tie, so not that much of your feet should be showing. Open toed shoes are acceptable if they are 'dress shoes'. I would personally stay away from reinforced toe tights if your shoes are open toe. I would probably stay away from fishnets as well, but some of the smaller patterned ones can be very dressy.

No toe-d tights. If you have toeless fishnets then those would probably be OK, but might look a bit odd. Sandal toe-less tights from M&S are amazing. And I second what someone else said about toenail varnish being compulsory: if the rest of you is clad in sober black then go for a gorgeous plummy red or scarlet, which looks sensational in black patent shoes.

I would totally show up in white socks. I can't wear stockings or tights.

Open-toed sandals are always beautiful. I think it's perfect for a party. (Off course without stockings.)
