Because I'm a canterous old git, I won't be sending Christmas cards to people I know via LiveJournal (unless I can think of a good reason why I should send them to particular people). I reserve Christmas cards for friends I'm bad at staying in touch with during the year, family, work colleagues and Guide people. If you want to send me Christmas cards, then my address is linked to from my userinfo.

Sir Ian Blair wants to know what we want from the police force. OK then, I'll tell you what I want - though I don't imagine you're listening.

I want the police service to carrying on doing the community work it does with schools and expand this role into going out into the community and providing people with crime prevention advice/running self defence classes and so on. I want people's fears of crime to match the reality. The police have a role to play in this - they can demonstrate that men are more likely than women to be victims of street crime and give both men and women advice on their own safety. They can explain the best ways to record one's property/mark it appropriately with one's details.

I want it to be easier to report minor crimes. Expand the online reporting system. Make it quicker for people to get crime reference numbers (I've never had to do this myself, but the tales I've heard are horrendous).

I want a discussion on what speed limits ought to be. When we reach a stage where the speed limits are generally thought of as 'right', I want them rigorously enforced with the money raised put into public transport provision. Yes, if you break a speed limit you should expect to be fined.

I want the police to shout about the work they're doing with 'minority' communities. Police treatment of prostitutes, LGBT people, people from ethnic minorities etc is (AIUI) far better than the press suggests. You're doing good work - tell us about it!

I want bobbies doing the work they've been trained to do, not wandering aimlessly up and down streets saying hello to the pensioners they pass. I want greater concentration on results than on the appearance of doing things that look good. I want you to spend your time investigating crime and finding the perpetrators.

I want you to defend your 'shoot to kill' policy. I know it's the right policy and I know why it's right, but you're being so timid about it that people aren't getting the message. Fact, if you have an armed suspect posing an immediate danger to people's lives, trying to shoot him in the leg is likely to cause him to set off his explosives/start shooting with his own weapon. The only option is to shoot him in the chest/maybe in the head.
