What's happening?

Can anyone explain in layman's terms why the stockmarket in China fell yesterday? Presumably the falls in the other stockmarkets are as a consequence of what happened in China and not caused by external events? The BBC isn't saying anything very helpful (and I'm not sure I trust its explanation of technical things to be accurate anyway). A clamp down on illegal trading and the introduction of a capital gains tax - I'm not sure I believe that that would be sufficient to cause a substantial stockmarket fall.
