PSA: Christmas
Dec. 2nd, 2007 11:50 pmIn previous years I've started off December with good intentions of sending lots of people Christmas cards. This year, I'm not even going to start off with that sort of good intention. I know they're nice to receive and string up around the living room and stuff, but I'm feeling terribly apathetic and can't be bothered to sit down and write them [once I sit down to write them I end up with a very long list of people to write cards for].
They also feel less worthwhile when I can be in touch with people via LiveJournal/email etc - Christmas cards always used to be a good way of staying in touch in pre-mass-internet days. What's the point now?
[There is also a bit of an environmental point about not wasting paper and the postal services, but that's a bit straw-clutchy, given that my main reason for not sending out cards is that I'm not feeling particularly Christmassy and can't be bothered, rather than that I'd like to help prevent global warming]
So, please don't expect a Christmas card from me. I may get round to sending them to non-internet using friends, which means if you're reading this you're even less likely to get one, but even that is a bit doubtful. Please take as read 'Merry Christmas'/'season's greetings'/$other appropriate sentiments that would normally be expressed in a Christmas card, if you celebrate Christmas. Please assume I've remembered your explicit request to not be included in any sort of Christmas greeting if you've made one.
I'm not intending to buy presents for anyone outside of my family (and possibly something for work), so I'd appreciate it if you didn't buy me presents without advance warning because I'm not expecting you to and I won't have bought you anything. I don't feel comfortable with non-reciprocal gift-giving at Christmas (birthdays are clearly different).
