Basic accounts
Mar. 13th, 2008 11:39 amYou can no longer create basic accounts [ie. free accounts with limited functions without advertising] on LiveJournal.
I've acquired a kind of learned helplessness over LiveJournal doing stupid things. I can't make the company act sensibly. All I can realistically do is choose to take my business elsewhere and much as I think they are bad at communicating with their customers, I don't think they're so bad that I want to boycott them [they've not say done anything on the scale of Nestle + third world mothers + baby milk or the car company making cars with engines in the boot 'cos it was cheaper to pay compensation to those injured as a result of the increased accident risk than to design cars with engines in the front] etc.
I continue to have a paid account as my self interest in not seeing adverts is bigger than my desire to not give money to a crap company. I also think that paying money is a reasonably fair trade off for not seeing adverts and if more people were prepared to pay for services there'd be less 'need' for companies to make money via advertising.
