There are local elections taking place in much of England & for the Scottish Assembly on 3rd May (I have no idea what's happening in Wales). The deadline to register to vote (you're eligible to register if you're a British, Commonwealth, Irish or citizen of an EU country) is 18th April - that's next Wednesday. You ought to have registered last October during the annual canvass, ie. when a form is sent round and you have to complete it with deails of who lives in the property, so this should only be relevant if you happened to miss the annual canvass or you've moved house and you want to vote at your new address (in these circumstances you are entitled to vote from your old address automatically).

See About my vote for details of the elections in your area and info on how to register/request a postal or proxy vote.

There are elections to the Borough Council in my area. Five candidates for two posts.
Two tories, one lib dem, one greeen & one independent. I received some literature from the two tories and didn't particularly like what they were suggesting, but it was OK, I've received a leaflet from the independent and don't want to vote for him, which leaves me with the lib dem and the green from whom I've so far heard nothing.

There are also 'Parish' elections to Bury Town Council (err, yes, I don't get that either). Here there are three candidates for two posts, two standing for a party called 'Abolish Bury Town Council', the other a tory (who is also standing for the Borough Council).

At the moment I've very little idea of how I'm going to vote though I'm intending (in this instance) to vote on the basis of local rather than national issues. I need to learn a bit more about the issues in question before I can make up my mind.

How about you? Who are you likely to be voting for (if you're going to vote at all) and why? [Yes, I appreciate some people won't want to discuss this, but I know some people do, so I'm happy to provide a 'space' to have such a discussion]
